53. An-Najm

The Star

وَٱلنَّجۡمِإِذَاهَوَىٰ١

By the star when it descends,

مَاضَلَّصَاحِبُكُمۡوَمَاغَوَىٰ٢

Your companion [i.e., Muḥammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,

وَمَايَنطِقُعَنِٱلۡهَوَىٰٓ٣

Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.

إِنۡهُوَإِلَّاوَحۡيٞيُوحَىٰ٤

It is not but a revelation revealed,

عَلَّمَهُۥشَدِيدُٱلۡقُوَىٰ٥

Taught to him by one intense in strength [i.e., Gabriel] -

ذُومِرَّةٖفَٱسۡتَوَىٰ٦

One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form

وَهُوَبِٱلۡأُفُقِٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ٧

While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.

ثُمَّدَنَافَتَدَلَّىٰ٨

Then he approached and descended

فَكَانَقَابَقَوۡسَيۡنِأَوۡأَدۡنَىٰ٩

And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.

فَأَوۡحَىٰٓإِلَىٰعَبۡدِهِۦمَآأَوۡحَىٰ١٠

And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed [i.e., conveyed].
